Cupcakes of Hope is a registered non-profit company (NPC 2012/108058/08) and public benefit organisation (PBO 930057226) that raises awareness and funds for families in need of assistance in the fight against childhood cancer.
They help over 260 families by paying for medical treatment or assisting with everyday expenses like transport to and from hospital, healthy food, warm clothing and nappies. They also provide emotional support for families, and surprise the little ones with memorable birthday treats so they get to feel just like a regular kid.
By easing financial burdens, families get to spend less time worrying and more time on what matters: being a family.

More and More Stories To Tell
We spoke to Amoré, her mom, Cindy, and her stepdad Wimpie. Amoré is also entering remission after a battle against Ependymoma, a type of cancer that causes tumours on the brain and spinal cord. But her journey doesn’t end with remission, she still faces gruelling physical rehabilitation to overcome the effects that the cancer has had on her growing body.
AMORÉ’S JOURNEY CONTINUES
Amoré’s parents also found out about Cupcakes of Hope from the doctors at the hospital where she was receiving treatment. As always, Cupcakes of Hope came to the rescue by providing monthly financial support, which enabled Amoré to get the treatment she needed.
Amoré has had to undergo 3 surgeries to remove tumours. While the results of these surgeries have been positive, they have taken a toll and she now needs to strengthen her muscles again. This physical rehab is intense and unfortunately Amoré has to travel far from home to get it, which means that she has to stay at the rehab facility all week while her parents go to work. Cupcakes of Hope has also helped with transport money so that her family can visit her more regularly, which we’re sure makes the recovery that much easier for her.
Soon, Amoré will be able to do her own bell-ringing ceremony. Until then, she’s still doing her best with physical rehab.
When you order your favourite Cupcake at your local M&B, you’re helping kids like Amoré. For each Cupcake sold nationwide, we’re donating to non-profit Cupcakes of Hope so that they can keep on supporting countless other kids through their fight against cancer and into remission.
More and More Messy Baking
Mpho and her mom, Gladys, both have bright, beaming smiles, fun-loving personalities, and a tendency to get messy while baking (watch the video to see what we mean). Mpho is fighting acute myeloid leukaemia, a type of cancer which starts in the bone marrow and causes the body to produce large quantities of abnormal blood cells. Leukaemia is an incredibly dangerous type of cancer because it advances rapidly, so early detection and proper treatment is vital. Luckily, Mpho was diagnosed quickly and her doctors got her onto chemotherapy as soon as they could.
MPHO’S JOURNEY OF COURAGE
Gladys was referred to Cupcakes of Hope by Mpho’s doctor. Gladys phoned them, but it was the festive season and even heroes like the team from Cupcakes of Hope need a break every now and then, so she didn’t get an immediate response. Mpho took matters into her own hands and reached out to Cupcakes of Hope herself via their Facebook page. Though she’s still young, this girl is filled with determination! Cupcakes of Hope answered her call with financial support that helps her get to hospital, cover the medical bills, and enjoy healthy foods.
Mpho is responding very well to her treatment, but what she needs most right now is a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find bone marrow donors in South Africa, mainly because of the misconception that donating bone marrow is painful. However this is not the case! If you are interested in helping leukaemia patients, and you’re between the ages of 16 and 45, please contact the South African Bone Marrow Registry to register.

More and More Goals Scored
Meet Mhlengi and his mom, Helen. We are overjoyed to share the news with you that Mhlengi is entering remission from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects blood cells and lymph nodes. He had his last chemotherapy and radiation sessions just a few months ago and the doctors are waiting on the final test results to officially declare that he’s beaten the disease.
MHLENGI’S JOURNEY OF COURAGE
Helen found out about Cupcakes of Hope from a social worker at the hospital. In Helen’s words, she found a new family in the Cupcakes of Hope network. It wasn’t only the financial support she received, but also the outpouring of love from people who understood her situation. Thanks to the money Cupcakes of Hope donated to the family, Mhlengi didn’t miss a single treatment session due to a lack of funds.
In cancer wards at hospitals, there’s always a bell mounted on a wall. Patients get to ring that bell and announce the end of their treatment when their doctors declare that they are in remission. This bell-ringing ceremony is practiced in almost every hospital around the world, and South Africa is no different. Helen told us about the first time she saw a child ringing their bell and how, in that moment, she saw what was possible for her son. It’s so lovely that Mhlengi will get to ring that bell himself soon, and hopefully give hope to another parent facing a similar ordeal.

Every year, about 800 to 1 000 kids are diagnosed with childhood cancer in South Africa. However, it is estimated that many more cases are never diagnosed or treated. Cupcakes of Hope has created a handy guide with all the warning signs that adults should be aware of.
Not near a Mugg & Bean today? You can still be a hero. Our partners at Cupcakes of Hope have more and more ways to give, so kids fighting cancer can get even more.
