Meet Mhlengi and his mom, Helen. We are overjoyed to share the news with you that Mhlengi is entering remission from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects blood cells and lymph nodes. He had his last chemotherapy and radiation sessions just a few months ago and the doctors are waiting on the final test results to officially declare that he’s beaten the disease.
Helen found out about Cupcakes of Hope from a social worker at the hospital. In Helen’s words, she found a new family in the Cupcakes of Hope network. It wasn’t only the financial support she received, but also the outpouring of love from people who understood her situation. Thanks to the money Cupcakes of Hope donated to the family, Mhlengi didn’t miss a single treatment session due to a lack of funds.
In cancer wards at hospitals, there’s always a bell mounted on a wall. Patients get to ring that bell and announce the end of their treatment when their doctors declare that they are in remission. This bell-ringing ceremony is practiced in almost every hospital around the world, and South Africa is no different. Helen told us about the first time she saw a child ringing their bell and how, in that moment, she saw what was possible for her son. It’s so lovely that Mhlengi will get to ring that bell himself soon, and hopefully give hope to another parent facing a similar ordeal.
When you order your favourite Cupcake at your local M&B, you’re helping kids like Mhlengi. For each Cupcake sold nationwide, we’re donating to non-profit Cupcakes of Hope so that they can keep on supporting countless other kids through their fight against cancer and into remission.
